Devotional by: Wes McGarry

The old saying goes, “God will never give you more than you can handle.” That saying is simply not true. The Psalmist writes about this in the chapter 66 starting in verse 10 For you, God, tested us; you refined us as silver is refined. You lured us into a trap; you placed burdens on our backs. You let men ride over our heads; we went through fire and water, but you brought us out to abundance. These were difficult times that the Psalmist was describing. It is clear that God tested His people with all sorts of burdens and oppressions. What is also clear is that God brought them out of those oppressions into abundance. God was teaching them through the refining process to rely on Him. God led his people into these situations so they would have no where else to turn, except to Him. Sin, leads people to acknowledge that the only hope they have, is the cross of Christ. Christians are led by God through the refining fires to return to complete dependence of the Gospel. The gospel, church, is all we have. Thankfully, it is all we need.
